Ai Weiwei may be the best-known contemporary Chinese artist. He joined the fledgling modern art movement in late 1970s Beijing, when China had just ended the 10-year Cultural Revolution and opened its doors to the rest of the world. From that moment his work has always been socially critical and provocative. After a dozen years spent in the U.S., he returned to China in 1993. Since then, his activities and artwork have been closely related to the complicated environment of China’s cultural, economic, and political developments. This talk will explore Ai Weiwei and his work within the context of both contemporary China and the larger global art market.
